Intuitive Surgical Tour, March 26, 2015

April 6, 2015

Intuitive Surgical in Sunnyvale hosted a SME SV tour on March 26, 2015 with 30 engineers attending.  Everyone had a “hands-on” operating a surgical robot for training purposes!  The manufacturing was very impressive, completely paperless, and utilized lean principles throughout the plant.

Intuitive Surgical is global technology leader in minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery. The Company’s da Vinci Surgical System enables surgeons to operate minimally invasive through a few small incisions or the belly button from a nearby ergonomic console.  The da Vinci System teatures a 3D HD vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand. As a result of the technology, da Vinci enables surgeons to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control.

What is Lean?

November 30, 2011

Lean Production is a very important concept in manufacturing, but it’s also crossing over to service sectors like health care. It embraces and extends many aspects of Total Quality Management, 6-Sigma, Just-in-Time, and other concepts you may be familiar with.

The key difference is that Lean provides a coherent umbrella framework, in order to prevent these techniques from becoming ends in themselves, and keep the focus on delivering value to customers.

The Lean Enterprise Institute has done a lot of good work in this area, and their quick explanation of “What is Lean?” is a good primer. If you’re interested in more, SME offers Lean Certification programs in conjunction with the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME), American Society for Quality (ASQ), and The Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence.
